This elective takes place on the beautiful island of Tobago at the Southern end of the Carribean Island chain. A quiet, serene, harmonious island Tobago is famous for its white sandy beaches and its fabulous scuba-diving. Well, you won’t get the plethora of five-star resorts that Barbados boasts, nor will you get the nightlife that Jamaica serves up. If you want those holidays, go there. The pace of life in Tobago comes in two speeds: slow and slower. No worries, take it easy, chill… Tobago is the place to go to lie back and relax. A young TobagonianVisitors talk of stepping off the plane and feeling the stress being sucked out of their body. Broad smiles greet you at the taxi rank, the crystal clear Caribbean glints at you as you travel on to your accommodation. And a cold Carib beer or refreshing rum punch will greet you at your destination. One of the best things about Tobago is that it welcomes you.

A Beach Paradise

Medical students who travel to Tobago will be based in Scarborough, Tobago’s largest town and will have the opportunity to take their elective at Tobago’s main hospital and become part of their relaxed and friendly community. A two minute walk from your accommodation to a beautiful, virtually private beach is ideal for those relaxed times after the hospital and in the weekends. The Discovery Trips are fun and bring you closer to being your own ‘Pirate of the Caribbean!’

Getting There

International flights normally arrive directly from the departure city (i.e. London for UK students). Occasionally, students buy flights that arrive into Trinidad. In this circumstance, students either catch a short domestic flight over to Tobago or catch the ferry. By catching the ferry, it makes it a little awkward for Medics Away to know exactly when you are arriving and therefore the time you need to be picked up. We would prefer you to get flight directly into Tobago.

Medics Away students are met off the international flight at the main airport for the island of Tobago. They are taken immediately to the Medics Away apartments, owned and run by the Medics Away Representative. From here you will have the chance to explore the local area and relax on the beach, less than a one minute walk from your residence. Check out the Representatives' shop and buy a few essential or non essential supplies. At a suitable time in the near future, new elective students are introduced to the hospitals head office, where upon your chosen specialty is allocated.

Scarborough is a small town on the coast of Tobago bustling with small, local markets. A charming, ramshackle town, Scarborough is the main shopping area for Tobago with a range of amenities suitable for visiting students, such as banks and restaurants. Away from Scarborough, Tobago’s principle attractions are its white, sandy beaches and the lush rainforest reserve which has a huge diversity of fauna and flora. Being a relatively small rainforest, it is very easy to visit and students can use local government-appointed guides to help spot exotic birds, tree frogs and even non-poisonous snakes.

Accommodation

Accommodation is provided in the form of 3 self catered, air-conditioned apartments. Owned and serviced by the Medics Away Representative, located 1 minute walk from one of the nicest beaches with its own lovely restaurant and bar and conveniently located near to a small shop, the apartments provide the perfect setting for independence, security and convenience. Daily transfers to and from the hospital each day are provided with the elective. One run to the hospital in the morning and one run back again in the early afternoon.

In our peak times of the year in the months of June, July and August, Medics Away regularly rents one or two houses right next door to the apartments. These are perfect for the bigger groups of five students or more. Please email us if you would like more details of others travelling or if you would like make a group reservation.

Discovery Trip

The Discovery Trip in Tobago is set over five days and takes place in consecutive weekends during you elective. The trips include Buccoo Reef, Coastline BBQ, Little Tobago (or Island Rainforest, depending on the time of year), Sunday School and Turtle Watching (or Englishman’s Bay depending on the time of year).

Please refer to Activities section of the Tobago website for more details of each of the trips. Additional trips are available, please use the Add to Itinerary button to submit further requests for trips. Medics Away will add them to your itinerary and adjust your invoice accordingly.

Hospital

The elective takes place in Tobago’s main hospital, which is very small by British standards, but still has a wide range of medical and surgical specialties. The hospital is situated in an old colonial fort, high on a hill overlooking the ocean and surrounded by lush gardens. With strong ties to Trinidad, where many of the more complex cases are sent, the hospital provides high quality, free health care to the wide community of Tobagans, and runs a large number of community clinics. There is also an excellent A&E department so hospital is always ready to provide the best standards of care to the populace. Due to the large oil reserves in Trinidad, Tobago is a relatively wealthy country with reasonably high standards of living.

A medical student who takes an elective to Tobago can expect to start their experience with a period of clinical observation where the host Consultant assesses their abilities. Most students will then be able to move on to shadowing the Consultant in clinics, attending ward rounds and joining the Consultant’s team on the wards. The hospital in Tobago has a pleasant relaxed feel to it.

Impressions of Tobago

Thank you so much for organising my elective. It really was a trip of a lifetime. I particularly enjoyed being in one place and really getting to know the people and area. I've done a lot of travelling in my time but have never really felt part of the community, which was really something special that happened in Tobago. I was also really fortunate to meet some great new friends on the elective who had also booked their elective through you... it was fabulous, given I was on my own at the time.

Edward Foo

I am back from my elective and had a great time!

Teleri Williams

A big thank you to all at Medics Away who helped arrange my elective. I had a fantastic time in Tobago and really appreciated the opportunities that presented themselves as a result of being placed in such a teaching friendly environment.

Further to this, the accommodation and the people who looked after my well-being whilst abroad were first rate. The people of Tobago are inherently hospitable anyway but there was no job too small for our landlord. The best example I could give you is that on finding he had no cricket bat suitable for beach cricket, he promptly fashioned a perfectly adequate one using a machete and a nearby piece of wood!

The exemplary service that I have received over the last few months has lead me to recommend you to many of my colleagues, and I sincerely hope that BSMS develops a strong student base with your company. The fact that this service did not waver despite the tragic death of Dr. Molyneux only points to the professional and dedicated nature of your staff.

I wish you all a happy and prosperous new year, Paul.

Paul Crowest

I have returned back from Tobago and had a fantastic time. It was thoroughly organised and I would like to thank you for that.
