Also known as the ‘Island of Spice’, the beautiful island of Grenada offers all of the charm and warmth of the Caribbean. A Commonwealth Realm with independence from Great Britain on March 3, 1967, Grenadians are a proud and friendly people. Medics Away students can expect to enjoy their time working in the local hospital, spending afternoons at the beach and weekends eating out and exploring.

“Goin’ Up The Road”

Grenada is a rolling, mountainous island, covered with fragrant spice trees and rare tropical flowers. Bordered by stunning beaches, and dotted with picturesque towns, this verdant island has long been a major source of nutmeg, cloves, ginger, cinnamon, and cocoa. The seductive drifts through the colourful Saturday markets and Grenada’s dense forests. In the interior of this volcanic island are cascading rivers and waterfalls, lush rainforests, and one of the most breathtakingly beautiful mountain lakes imaginable. The capital, St. George’s, is widely held to be the loveliest city in the Caribbean. Its horseshoe-shaped harbour is surrounded by a pastel rainbow of dockside warehouses and the red-tiled roofs of traditional shops and homes.

Getting There

Grenada is easy to reach. Flights travel regularly from the UK to the Caribbean, via Barbados generally. Virgin Atlantic provide a very comfortable and affordable journey. Students should expect to pay in the region of £600-700 for return flights. Flights from Northern America are also easy to come by, most connect through Miami and New York.

Once in Grenada, Medics Away will arrange a pick up at the airport, take you directly to your accommodation whereby our Representative will introduce herself and orientate you to your new tropical environment.

Accommodation

Spectacular views over the world famous Grand Anse Beach and the secluded Morne Rouge Bay. Both are just a stroll away. Large spacious self contained rooms with cooking facilities, air-conditioning, a fridge, balconies and most have a good view of the ocean, a good size pool and a beautiful restaurant that’s reasonably priced and has spectacular views. The accommodation also caters for veterinary students during semester times so you can expect to make lots of friends outside of the Medics Away groups.

Students are expected to make there own way to the hospitals in the morning. There is a very convenient bus service just near the accommodation, directly into Saint Georges. From there, a simple transfer to another bus up the hill to the hospital. Alternatively you can arrange with Lotten the Representative a regular pickup service for every working weekday morning. The cost of this is quite inexpensive but is not included in the final package as the public bus service is so convenient, cheap and seems to be the route of choice for most of the students living in the area.

Discovery Trip

The Discovery Trip takes place over four days and constitutes the Sunset Sailing and Snorkelling Tour, the Round Island Tour, the Seven Sisters Tour and the Beach BBQ. All trips are designed to give you a wide experience of the island and its inhabitants. Learn about the production of it’s biggest export of Spices (Nutmeg, Mace, etc.). Visit incredible beaches around the island. Sail the seas and snorkel the incredible reefs. Or just relax with drinks and food at the Beach BBQ.

Hospital

Students rotate in the Saint Augustine Medical Services (SAMS) Hospital, just above the town of Saint Georges. It is a Private Medical Hospital, designed as an Inpatient centre for Medical, Surgical, Maternity and Emergency Admissions. Situated 10 minutes away from St. George’s, in a quiet, serene and secure suburb. The Hospital is located in the cool hills of St. Paul’s in a picturesque setting. The hospital provides clinics in General Practitioner, Internal Medicine, Radiology, Dermatology, General Surgery, Orthopedics, Neurology, Gastroenterology, Obstetrics and Gynecology. Well connected to the local Saint Georges Public Hospital and numerous community services, SAMS is the perfect place to experience medicine in Grenada.

The Director of the hospital is popular a member of his community and very keen for students to experience all that Grenada and it’s people have to offer. Students are expected to rotate in the hospital in the mornings, but be sure to unwind and relax in the afternoons. This elective is not ‘medically intensive’, however students can expect to feel integrated and welcomed into a diverse and progressive medical facility.

Impressions of Grenada

I am just back from my travels after my amazing elective, which I thank you very much for organising.

Carolann Barrie

The trip was indeed absolutely amazing. I've got lots of good photos on my camera so when I upload them I'll make sure to put some in the group! I can't think of anything more that could have been done from your side.
