A traveler’s dream, Bali is rich in culture and filled with inexplicable natural beauty – a playground for the young and adventurous. Bali is the perfectly sized island. It has some of the friendliest people you’re ever likely to meet, and there is a surfeit of excitement of which to take advantage. Surrounded by warm tropical waters, centred by monstrous volcanoes and covered by jungle, you would be hard pressed not to have a great time in Bali.

Temples, Volcanoes, Waterfalls

Medics Away students are based on the southern shores of the island. Live in the popular tourist town of Legian (the beach district of Kuta) and commute the relatively short distance to the capital Denpasar for hospital rotations. Spend your weekends exploring and discovering temples, waterfalls, volcanoes and traditional ceremonies. The night life is second to none so you won’t find yourself in the position of ‘all work and no play’!

Getting There

Scheduled flights to Bali from the UK and other international locations, are with Cathay Pacific, Korean Air, Malaysia, Renowned Airline, Qatar Airways, Singapore Airlines and Thai. Prices can range from £550 GBP to £750 GBP return. If you travel East from the UK, you will generally stop overs in Dubai or Singapore. Both of these locations are worth the visit if you have a chance. On arrival into Kuta, the Medics Away Rep will pick you up and take you to the accommodation.

Accommodation

Accommodation in Bali is provided on a shared or a single basis. Situated in the coastal town of Legian, near Kuta, the hotel has 17 double/twin fan or air-conditioned rooms. Hot and cold water with a small restaurant to the right on entry. The pool is clean and located to the rear and side of the rooms. The rooms are in a two-story block with their own patio or balcony. The rooms are neat, tidy and clean, and the en-suite bathrooms match. TV and fridge are present in air-con rooms (all Medics Away students are provided with air-con rooms).

Local amenities are numerous and good for eating out on occasion. At this time, no private cooking facilities are available, but locally cooked food in Warongs and restaurants are cheap and very tasty. Transport to and from the hospital is provided during the week. If enough students book, Medics Away provide transport throughout the elective all week long (including weekends) to explore the island in some style.

Discovery Trip

The Discovery Trip consists of five excursions and a visit to the John Fawcett Eye Clinic. Spend the weekends with friends on a island of adventure. Discover the geographical and religious centre of Bali on the Volcano tour. Time with Bali’s teenage ninja friends on Turtle Island. Arts of crafts of Ubud. Surfers paradise at UIuwatu. A day of excitement with the Elephant & White Water Rafting. Trips take place during the weekends. They are a lot of fun and students of past have given us a lot of good feedback about the organisation (thanks to Edy, the Rep).

Please refer to the Activities section of the Bali website for more details of each of the trips. Additional trips are available, please use the Add to Itinerary button to submit further requests for trips. Medics Away will add them to your itinerary and adjust your invoice accordingly.

Please remember, the Full elective includes the five trips and Daily Hospital Transfers. The Barebone elective does NOT include these Discovery Trips, nor the Daily Hospital Transfers. Students who choose Barebone elective can opt to Add the Daily Hospital Transfers to their itinerary. Please use the following link to add this option to the Barebone elective: Daily Hospital Transfer.

Hospital

Bali has a selection of hospitals and clinics. The best hospital in Bali is Sanglah hospital in Denpasar. For tourists, if you have any serious problem, you’ll end up here. It obviously serves a great proportion of the national public also. Its facilities have improved since the emergency ward had been built in 1991. Difficult and critical cases are no longer a problem anymore since it has the complete array of specialist staff and equipment.

The Australian Memorial Centre opened its doors in July 2004 as part of a $4.5 million package to improve hospital care after Balinese doctors struggled to cope with the hundreds of injured at Kuta three years previously. It’s a pristine building and, unlike other parts of the sprawling Sanglah complex, the air conditioning keeps the atmosphere sterile and cool. Medical staff say standards of hygiene are high, particularly for the 14-bed burns ward, which cares for at least one severely burned child a fortnight. Sanglah has also taken delivery of an image intensifying unit, on loan from Brisbane’s Princess Alexandra Hospital.

Students participating in a hospital rotation in Bali will find themselves fully immersed in the every day workings of the hospital. The visa process is a little more complicated than most other electives, however, with a little help from the UK and local Bali representative, this hurdle is easily overcome. Early bookings are advised to allow applications for visas to be guaranteed.

Impressions of Bali

Wouter van Eeden here. I don't know if you still remember me but Im a medical student from The Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland. We had all that trouble with our passports last year. Me and 3 friends (Andrew, Pavan, Hussain) went to Bali last June for 4 weeks. We had an absolute amazing time and we're thinking of going away to Tobago this year around June. Can I ring you sometime tomorrow or when ever it suits you and we can have a short meeting about it? Just to get your opinion etc... Just gimme a time and well arrange it.

Wouter van Eeden

I just wanted to send you a quick belated email to say thank you for a fantastic elective in Bali. I had a great time and everything ran smoothly. In particular, your Rep was very friendly and helpful. It is such a beautiful country and I'm so glad I got the opportunity to visit it. The hospital were very friendly and welcoming and I saw a wide variety of clinical cases there. The day trips were all great, allowing me to see quite a bit of the island.

I got back from my elective in Bali about a week ago now and I just wanted to write to you to say a huge thanks to you and everyone at Medics Away. I have a really really fantastic time in Bali! I thoroughly enjoyed the placement at the hospital (despite the vast number of public holidays in Bali!) and really enjoyed all the various trips that your Rep took us out on. It was all organised really well and I'd definitely recommend you guys to friends to use in the future. So thanks very much! I didn't really want to come back home!

Katharine Perry

Thanks a lot for this memorable experience, we couldn't do it without the help of u guys and our Boss Edy! He helped us a lot, we contacted him 24 hrs! We really had a good experience. Continue the hard work! Many thanks to Edy for his warm welcome and support. He was well organised, on time, present 24 hrs, like a father to us ,and a perfect leader.

Latifa Alnaim

I am writing to you regarding my experience with Medics Away. I'd just like to convey what a fantastic experience I had, and would like to express my sincere thanks. I also feel it should be noted how much Eddy helped in this. Not only was he more than willing to help organise activities or answer any queries, but always in an extremely personable way. I close by thanking you again and saying that I will definitely advising others on using Medics away in the future.
