The Kingdom of Thailand is a country in Southeast Asia with coasts on the Andaman Sea and the Gulf of Thailand. It borders Burma to the northwest, Laos to the northeast, Cambodia to the southeast and Malaysia to the south. With great food, a tropical climate, fascinating culture and great beaches, Thailand is a magnet for travellers the world over. You can find almost anything here: thick jungle as green as can be, crystal blue waters that feel more like a warm bath than a swim in the ocean. Exotic, yet safe; cheap, yet equipped with every modern amenity you need, there is something for every interest and every price bracket.

A Royal Location

Students are located in the southern town of Hua Hin. The Kings playground, it is also popular with Thais, having become quite fashionable as a weekend getaway spot for Bangkok residents, as well with foreigners. Besides just sunbathing, snorkelling and swimming, visitors can also enjoy golf, spas, caves, peaks, waterfalls, shops, seafood and nearby national parks. The town is clean, warm and laid-back, making it ideal for Medics Away students.

Getting There

Most students arrive via international flights into Bangkok and we would recommend transferring straight down to Hua Hin on arrival. Bangkok is most certainly a place to visit, but with all your luggage and having freshly arrived from a long haul flight, you are better off getting down to Hua Hin to check into your nice hotel and then considering weekend trips back up to Bangkok at a more convenient and relaxed time during your elective. Transfers to Hua Hin from Bangkok are approximately 2 hours.

Medics Away offers a pickup and drop off service to  Hua Hin from the airport. This is not included in the price of the elective as there is an easy, comfortable and cheaper method of transferring (if student wish), by train. The train service is regular and via reliable. Medics Away charges £70GBP per transfer to the hotel or to the airport (i.e. each way) between members of a group. Our service is very convenient and worth the money if you looking for the easiest and most comfortable transfer. Most students do sign up for the transfer. Its simple, its direct and the cost is actually worth it (especially if arriving as a group and splitting the cost).

Accommodation

You will receive a warm and friendly Thai welcome as soon as you step into our relaxed open-plan hotel. Located on a quiet road between the bustling centre of Hua Hin and the grandeur of the Royal Summer Palace. The meandering tropical garden brings calm and tranquility to a cultural stay in Thailand’s traditional seaside town. Sunbathe on one of our teak sun-beds, relax in the shade of a palm tree by the poolside, or enjoy lunch in the excellent open-air restaurant serving Thai and international cuisine. The rooms seamlessly blend the traditional and the contemporary. Tasteful teak furniture and wooden flooring is complimented by free wireless internet service and cable TV. The beach is just a short stroll away with its seaside restaurants offering colourful night time vistas of the fishing fleets out in the Gulf of Thailand.

Discovery Trip

Medics Away no longer provides a Discovery Trip in Thailand. The package is Barebones only. The reason for this is simple. Our hotel is very nice and provides tours. There are a lot of tour companies in Thailand, however we are duty bound to purchase tours through our hotel. The tours through our hotel are quite expensive, more than our students would want to pay. As a result, we offer a barebones package and then students can pick for themselves the tours they want to go on. This prevents Medics Away from providing tours that maybe considered too expensive.

Hospital

Medics Away has associated with a number of hospitals in Thailand over the years. We only use one hospital exclusively each year, however, the hospital may change from year to year depending on availability and convenience. Some hospitals are a little further away than others and can require a 45 minute (each way) commute between the accommodation and the facility. Medics Away provides all transportation between hotel and hospital. If the commute is long, Medics Away recommend students do 3 long days in the hospital as opposed to 5 shorter days; this way it saves on transfers but gets you the time you need in a clinical environment. The hospitals include Phrachomklao Hospital, Petcharat Hospital, Hua Hin Hospital & San Paulo Hospital.

Due to the open and welcoming nature of the people of Thailand, a hospital rotation here is very good. They will want you to be fully included in the clinical practice. A full variety of specialty is available including general medicine, surgery, emergency and paediatrics.
